Resolution 982 – Advocating for Single Payer Health Care with the Universal Health Care Commission and Legislature
WHEREAS, the 2020 Washington State Democratic party platform recognizes health care as a human right and states that an affordable, universal, single-payer system for Washington residents is essential to an equitable and effective system; and
WHEREAS, the Universal Health Care Work Group created by the legislature reported its findings in January 2021 after stakeholders and state agencies analyzed options and cost savings for implementing universal health care, including a single payer system; and
WHEREAS, by passing E2SSB 5399, the Washington State Legislature has created the Universal Health Care Commission and has required it to consider how Washington can implement a comprehensive, equitable, and affordable health care system; and
WHEREAS, the Universal Health Care Commission is required to consider how a single-payer financing system could be implemented, and to report to the legislature by November 1, 2022;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the WSDCC call on the Universal Health Care Commission to report to the legislature as soon as possible; and
THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the WSDCC call on the legislature to implement a single-payer system for Washingtonians as soon as possible; and
THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the WSDCC should transmit this Resolution to Washington Governor Jay Inslee’s office and all Washington State Democratic Legislators.
